Dear Friends,
The most important lesson of our time is learning how to mend and tend to the fabric of our community. Togetherness and shared creativity are essential to the fabric that binds us.
When the Chocolate Church Arts Center began in 1977 as the Performing Arts Center of Bath, artist-founder Jack Doepp envisioned a community akin to an ensemble, a collective that makes things—together. He asked a lot of people to help restore a vacant church and bring his ideas to fruition, but in a city of hard-working shipbuilders, Jack’s rigor felt like respect. Shared creativity around this endeavor animated Bath, creating memories and rituals. And in the years that followed, that spirit endured.
We know the Chocolate Church Arts Center is so much more than a venue. It is a community anchor. It is a place where people of all ages make, build, and create together, as they did in Jack’s time, in addition to gathering for unforgettable live shows.
Our vision moving forward is to re-center the Chocolate Church on community creativity, embracing the “Arts Center” part of our name. I’m writing today to ask you to please make a donation today to support the Chocolate Church Arts Center’s role in the fabric and bright future of Bath.
Already, several of our new programs embody this holistic vision: our free, community Art Lab, growing music education program, pageants, community choir, and annual community theater productions. With your belief and investment, we will go even further.
In 2026, we are partnering with Bath elementary schools to produce a children’s variety show. We will pilot a new, multidisciplinary arts program for local youth. We will draw on decades of community theater experience to produce a large-scale summer spectacle that activates our space in new ways and takes the art beyond our walls. We will continue to tend to our historic building while showcasing outstanding, regional and national performers, engaging audiences of all ages.
With your support, our multiple offerings and programs can be the seeds that spark imagination, cultivate delight, and strengthen the bonds of our community for decades to come.
With gratitude,
Matthew Glassman
